Membership Pathway at the Junior League of Long Island

Joining JLLI is a step-by-step experience designed to welcome new members, build leadership skills, and create lasting connections. Below is a simple overview of how membership works.

Step 1: Join and Pay Dues

Once your application is approved and you pay the $85 new member dues, you officially become a Provisional Member.

Step 2: Provisional Membership (First Year)

What is a Provisional?
Provisional status is reserved for members in their first year. This year is focused on learning about the League, developing leadership skills, and getting hands-on experience through training and service.

Junior League membership levels include:

• Provisional
• Active
• Sustainer
• Sustainer Emeritus

Step 3: Provisional Year Requirements

During the provisional year, members are expected to complete the following:

• Attend at least one General Membership Meeting (GMM)
• Be placed on a committee and participate throughout the League year
• Complete a Provisional Project
• Support the Thrift Shop by either:
  • Donating $150 worth of items, or
  • Volunteering 4 hours at the Thrift Shop
• Attend Super Saturday
• Attend 4 out of 5 Provisional Training Courses

These requirements are designed to provide a well-rounded introduction to the League’s mission, structure, and impact.

Step 4: Transition to Active Membership

Once all provisional requirements are completed, members are eligible to transition to Active Membership, where they continue serving on committees, take on leadership roles, and deepen their involvement in the League.

Beyond Active Membership

As members progress through their League journey, they may later transition to:

• Sustainer Membership, which offers continued connection and engagement with greater flexibility
• Sustainer Emeritus, recognizing long-term service to the League

Eligibility Requirements

To us, becoming a civic leader is all about understanding that local efforts have a global reach, and it all begins with creating local leadership opportunities that put women’s skills and passion to work right here on Long Island. If you’re interested in developing civic leadership skills while collaborating on important efforts with a group of like-minded women, you’re in the right place!

• Applicants must be 21 to be eligible for membership.
• Applicants must have resided on Long Island for 1 year prior to their date of application.
